Footprints

  • Date: 25th November 2017
  • Time: 20:00
  • Location: A Jazz Quintet covering everything from Ballads and Bebop to Latin and Funk
  • Venue: Footprints

At MAP a ‘Footprints’ quintet of saxes, piano, bass and drums will perform a varied and lively set-list of about fifteen jazz pieces.

Numbers will range from 1950s ‘bebop and ballads’ through to recent cross-over styles including funk and some Latin-influenced material. Some of the tunes we will play are well-known, even if audiences often know them without knowing what they are or where they come from. Others are unfamiliar and hardly ever played, overlooked in a vast Aladdin’s cave of jazz standards. We’ll include tunes by Charlie Parker, Thelonius Monk, Benny Golson, Cannonball Adderley, John Coltrane, Joe Henderson, Horace Silver, Oliver Nelson, Freddie Hubbard, Herbie Hancock and others. Some we’ll play simply, others as arranged specially for this MAP line-up, and others given distinctive new treatments with extended improvisation. We’ll also feature a version of Wayne Shorter’s celebrated ‘Footprints’, a tune now roughly half-a-century old that inspires by suggesting how playing and listening to jazz in the 21st century can be like walking trails forged much earlier – as ‘giant steps’ in their day – by great composers and improvisers.

An opportunity to enjoy a relaxed and inclusive evening of live jazz, close-up. Our two sets will bring together some well-known standards, from different periods and in a wide range of styles, with pieces by familiar jazz composers that you nevertheless won’t have heard before. Tunes will combine with flights of spontaneous improvisation in an accessible mix.

Footprints’ is an informal group of musicians who come together, from different musical backgrounds and experiences, to share their enjoyment of playing great and sometimes neglected tunes from the jazz repertoire. For our evening at MAP, our line-up will be:

David Buckingham – baritone & alto saxes
Danny Silverstone – alto sax
Nick Skates – piano / electric piano
Alan Durant – double bass
Adrian Samuels – drums

Doors at 7.30pm. Band begins at 8pm.
