We’re really sorry for who showed up on the 24th, when we showed a different film from planned. There was a miscommunication and the director of a different film showed up with an audience wanting to screen his film! Next week we’ll show this film 100% guaranteed!

Evening, Comrades! The White Sun of the Desert is generally seen as the finest film in a genre called “red western”, or Ostern/Eastern: the USSR’s answer to the Spaghetti western. This film enjoyed massive popularity in the Soviet Union, but was little known in the rest of the world. The film is watched by Cosmonauts before space launches as a good luck ritual.Set near the end of the Russian Civil war, in which the Bolshevik RED ARMY fought against the Monarchic and Capitalist WHITE ARMY, red army soldier Fyodor Sukhov is stationed in (what is now known as) Turkmenistan, near the shore of the Caspian sea. As his service has come to an end, he is looking forward to his return to (modern day) Russia to reunite with his wife. Of course, fate puts a spanner in the wheels, and Sukhov is ordered to take care of a Harem of women left behind by a local guerilla leader.Dreamily melancholic, entertaining and funny, this film would easily be counted among the top of western cinema among classics like “A fistful of Dollars” and “The Good the Bad and the Ugly” if it were more widely known in the West.

★★★

Of course, to keep in the spirit of Bolshevism, this screening will be 100% free!
