This week there will be a screening of one of Bowie’s best. Set in 1942 in a Japanese prisoner camp for British officers situated on Java, this movie deals with cultural differences between the Orient and the West. A sense of mutual respect and understanding grows between the captors and prisoners, while at the same time it becomes apparent that these two worlds will never fully grasp each other.

This is not a war movie, rather a complex story of loyalty and betrayal, life and death, eroticism and pain, all held together by a fantastic soundtrack composed by Ryuichi Sakamoto,
